The Joy of Victory and the Pain of Defeat

An abstract of Jim Congdon’s sermon on February 16, 2025, in the Joshua series. Watch the sermon video here.

Have you ever had an amazing success, only to face an unexpected setback right after? That's exactly what happened to the ancient Israelites after their incredible victory at Jericho. They had just witnessed one of the most remarkable military victories in history - the walls of a mighty city falling down without their army lifting a sword. But their next battle, against a much smaller city called Ai, ended in a surprising and painful defeat.

The Hidden Reason

Why did they lose? The answer lay buried in the ground beneath one man's tent. After God had specifically said not to take any treasures from Jericho, a man named Achan couldn't resist. He saw some beautiful items - a fancy coat from Babylon, silver coins, and a gold bar - and decided to secretly keep them for himself. He probably thought, "No one will miss these few things." But his private choice had public consequences.

The Ripple Effect

Achan's decision didn't just affect him. His whole community suffered a military defeat, and 36 soldiers lost their lives. It's a powerful reminder that our choices, even ones we think are completely secret, can impact others in ways we never imagined. Think about it like throwing a stone into a pond - the ripples spread far beyond the point where the stone hits the water.

The Power of Honesty

When confronted, Achan did something remarkable - he told the truth. He admitted what he had done wrong. While the consequences were severe (reflecting the serious nature of his actions in that historical context), his honesty teaches us something important: being truthful about our mistakes is the first step toward making things right.

From Tragedy to Hope

But here's where the story takes an unexpected turn. The place where this sad event happened was called the Valley of Achor (which means "trouble"). Years later, God made an amazing promise through the prophet Hosea - He would turn this "Valley of Trouble" into a "Door of Hope." This shows us something beautiful about God's character: He can take our biggest mistakes and transform them into pathways toward something better.

Lessons for Today

What can we learn from this ancient story?

  1. Secret actions on Earth are visible in Heaven - nothing is truly hidden

  2. Being honest about our mistakes helps restore our relationship with God

  3. God can transform our valleys of trouble into doors of hope

  4. Our private choices often have public consequences

  5. Success can sometimes make us overconfident - stay humble

Moving Forward

Maybe you're carrying something heavy today - a choice you regret, a secret that's weighing you down, or consequences from past actions that seem impossible to overcome. The good news is that God specializes in fresh starts. Just as He promised to turn a valley of trouble into a door of hope, He can help you find a way forward, too.
