The Unseen Battle: Understanding Spiritual Warfare in Our Daily Lives

An abstract of Connor Kraus’ sermon on February 9, 2025, in the Joshua series. Watch the sermon video here.

Every day, beyond what our eyes can see, there's a battle taking place in the spiritual realm. While we focus on our visible struggles – relationship conflicts, health challenges, or personal setbacks – there's actually something much bigger happening behind the scenes. This truth, revealed in the ancient story of Jericho, is just as relevant to our lives today.

The Battle We Don't See

When the Israelites faced the fortress of Jericho, they weren't just up against thick walls and armed soldiers. They were engaging in spiritual warfare against dark forces that had established themselves in the land. Just as the commander of God's army revealed to Joshua, the battle wasn't primarily physical – it was spiritual. This same reality applies to our daily struggles.

Understanding Our Real Enemy

The Bible tells us clearly: "Our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers of this darkness, against evil spiritual forces in the heavens" (Ephesians 6:12). Satan, the enemy of our souls, works tirelessly to steal, kill, and destroy. He's not a cartoon character with a pitchfork – he's a fallen angel actively working to separate us from God's love and purpose for our lives.

God's Weapons for Spiritual Warfare

Just as God gave Israel an unconventional battle plan for Jericho, He's given us spiritual weapons that might seem strange by worldly standards:

  • Prayer - our direct line of communication with God

  • Faith - our shield against the enemy's attacks

  • Truth - our weapon against lies and deception

  • The Word of God - our offensive weapon in spiritual battles

  • Worship - our declaration of God's victory

The Victory Is Already Won

Here's the incredible news: while we're still in the fight, the ultimate outcome is already determined. Just as God told Israel that Jericho was already delivered into their hands before the walls fell, He's already secured our victory through Jesus Christ. Satan's defeat isn't a possibility – it's a certainty. The book of Revelation shows us that Satan's final destination isn't a throne, but eternal punishment.

Fighting from Victory, Not for Victory

Understanding this truth changes everything about how we face our daily battles:

  • We can face our struggles with confidence, knowing God's already won

  • We don't fight for victory – we fight from victory

  • Even when battles persist, we know the final outcome

  • We can use God's spiritual weapons with authority
